THE EFFECT OF WAX PURIFICATION, CELL GEOMETRY, AND SUCCINIC ACID ON THE BEE COLONIES DEVELOPMENT
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of wax raw material processing, the cell base angle of the wax foundation (130° and 110°), the addition of succinic acid to the foundation, and supplementary feeding on wax foundation acceptance, the area of capped brood, the content of larval royal jelly, and the weight of daily worker bees. The studies were conducted in the Republic of Bashkortostan and at the training and experimental apiary of the RSAU – Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K.A. Timiryazev during the spring and summer seasons of 2022–2025. The objects of the study were bee colonies of the Carpathian and Central Russian breeds. The wax was treated with tartaric acid 1:100 and clarified with hydrogen peroxide with sodium bicarbonate, succinic acid was added to the liquid wax. Wax foundation was made with base angles of 130° and 110°. Top dressing – sugar syrup (1 kg sugar per 1 l water) 300 ml every other day, 15 top dressings. In the experimental variants the syrup contained succinic acid. The number of built combs from 20 frames, the area of sealed brood in squares, the content of larval royal jelly in mg, the weight of daily worker bees in mg were recorded. The results at 130° without cleaning were (6.7 ± 0.25) built combs, with cleaned wax with succinic acid at 130° – (12.10 ± 0.30) combs, at 110° without cleaning – (15.2 ± 0.37) combs, the combined group – (19.80 ± 0.13) combs. The area of sealed brood on June 2: in the control group – 219.74 squares, increases in the experimental groups: +7.9 %, +5.2, +12.3 %. Larval royal jelly content on April 26: 10.60 mg in the control group, the best in the experimental group (13.80 mg, +30.2 %). Day-old bee weight on June 14: (109.0 ± 1.10) mg in the control group, the highest in the experimental group (110.40 ± 1.36) mg. Complex wax treatment, reducing the cell angle to 110°, and supplementation with succinic acid ensure the greatest increase in wax foundation intake, capped brood area, larval royal jelly level, and day-old worker bee weight.
